Crowborough Life

Last week, Nus Ghani MP awarded the first Wealden Hero Awards to Crowborough residents Spencer Miller, Maisie Jones and Alison Cousins, for their efforts in relation to the groups “Supporting Crowborough” and “Sewing Crow-Bees”.

Nus Ghani said: "Spencer, Maisie and Alison have made a huge contribution to fellow Crowborough residents. From the many nominations that they have received, I know how valued they are by everyone in the community. I am delighted to present them with the Wealden Hero Award and to celebrate their efforts. Many thanks for all your work throughout the pandemic and beyond."

Sewing Crow-Bees:

Maisie began sewing face masks for the local community at the beginning of spring. Soon after, she was joined by Alison and together they began making fabric face masks for carers, key workers and volunteers in Crowborough. They became known as the “Sewing Crow-Bees”, now a team of eighteen ladies.

The masks are being offered for free, but donations are welcome. Initially they raised just over £1,500 for NHS Charities Together. Upon learning that the annual Crowborough Hospital Fete could not go ahead this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they were determined to do as much as possible to make up loss of income.

So far, the Sewing Crow-Bees have raised more than £6,000 for Crowborough Hospital.

Friday was the first time most of the Sew Crow-Bees met one another. Jarvis Brew kindly provided smoothies and cake for their gathering on Chapel Green.

The fabric face masks they make are available from a number of shops and other places in Crowborough & Rotherfield. For more information, Follow them on social media: www.facebook.com/sewingcrowbees/

Supporting Crowborough

Spencer has received an overwhelming amount of nominations for a Wealden Award for his tremendous effort to organise support across the community. He has been the driving force behind the “Supporting Crowborough” movement, the coronavirus community support group in Crowborough.

Volunteers have been offering help to vulnerable people and those who are self-isolating with getting essential shopping and picking-up prescriptions, as well as providing a helpline for people who feel lonely and would like a chat.

On Twitter Spencer said: "I accepted this award on the understanding that Nus made it to me on behalf of Supporting Crowborough, I am part of an amazing group of people and this is for them as well as me."

You can contact Supporting Crowborough via a telephone helpline 01892 317151, or by emailing [email protected].
