Nus Ghani MP’s statement – Government vote on Tiers

Wealden MP Nus Ghani has made recent statements concerning the impact of the national lockdown and the impact of the tier restrictions on the health and well-being of communities across Wealden. She joined a number of Parliamentary colleagues to try and get more transparency and objective criteria to the tiers and concessions for Covid safe sectors.

Nus commented…

“I am pleased that the Prime Minister did address a number of our key concerns. We have the reopening of key sectors in Wealden including retail, places of worship, outdoor sports, gyms, personal care and hospitality.  Extra funding was announced for drinks only pubs and we did also secure regular tier reviews and a sunset clause, meaning further assessment of the tiers and votes in Parliament.

However I was disappointed at the quality of the cost benefit analysis produced by the Government and the lack of evidence that the tiers will do more good than harm.

So with regret I was unable to support the Government’s legislation this time. I’m not against the tier system, but want to see real granular data behind the restrictions and consultation with local leaders and health managers. The Government did confirm that it would do both of these over the next 2 weeks prior to the next tier review and I hope that with hard work we can get Wealden down to tier 1.

I will continue to campaign hard on your behalf as so many of you have made extraordinary sacrifices and are understandably anxious about your health and livelihoods. I share many of your concerns about wider public health, our economy and civil liberties. We have a long way to go get this wretched virus under control even with the good news of a vaccine underway. Regardless, I will continue to do everything I can to represent your views and secure the best outcome for Wealden.”

Holding Government to Account

Written questions allow Members of Parliament to ask government ministers for information on the work, policy and activities of government departments. They are a valuable tool which MPs can use to hold government to account, and I am keen to use them as best I can to seek out information which can be used to improve things for my constituents in Wealden.
