Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed news of the Conservative Government’s plan to build a more caring society, with the announcement of a £20 million fund to help tackle loneliness and bring people together.

The investment builds on the legacy of Jo Cox MP, who was tragically killed two years ago this month. Jo worked with charities and groups fighting social isolation.

This weekend, ‘Great Get Together’ events will be held across the country to celebrate Jo Cox’s life, as communities come together to celebrate all that unites us.

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “As the former Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Ageing and Older People, I heard first-hand the effect of loneliness on older people, for whom it can be the biggest killer.

“Some of the people I meet while visiting people across Wealden have not spoken to anyone other than me for a week, however loneliness affects people of all ages.

“I am delighted to see the Government commit a significant investment to go towards tackling social isolation. Jo Cox did fantastic work in this area and I hope that this will go some way to carrying on her remarkable legacy.

“I am looking forward to joining Great Get Together events in Wealden over the next few weeks to celebrate everything that unites our communities across East Sussex, further working to tackle loneliness.”
