Brighter Uckfield

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, is delighted that Wealden community group Brighter Uckfield received The King's Award for Voluntary Service.

Wealden charity Brighter Uckfield is one of 262 organisations across the UK that have been awarded the first ever King’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given to local volunteer groups in recognition of their outstanding community service.

Brighter Uckfield are a long-established group of volunteers dedicated to improving the look and feel of Uckfield by not only keeping it clean and litter free, but also by clearing ignored patches of land, painting neglected buildings, planting bulbs and flower displays, and cleaning road signs. For 17 years, they have been working in all weathers to ensure that the town remains free of litter and is welcoming for visitors and residents alike.

Nusrat was pleased to meet some of Brighter Uckfield members earlier in the spring to congratulate them on their nomination and supported their work at the recent Volunteer Fair.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and, following His Majesty The King’s accession in 2022, he emphasised his desire to continue the Award.

Nusrat Ghani said: “I’m incredibly proud that Wealden’s very own Brighter Uckfield are the recipients of one of the first Voluntary Service awards of the King's reign. I know that litter is an issue of concern for many local residents and I am grateful for all the fantastic work that Brighter Uckfield continue to do to make Uckfield cleaner and brighter. It was a pleasure to meet some of the group members earlier this year and my warmest congratulations go to every volunteer that has been supporting Brighter Uckfield for the past 17 years. The King's Award for voluntary service is the UK’s highest award for outstanding voluntary services and I’m pleased that their efforts were rightly recognised this way.”
