Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, Chairman of Ways & Means, Madam Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, was pleased to join her female Parliamentary colleagues in celebrating 97 years since women gained the right to vote on equal terms with men in Parliament.
With over 30,000 men having served in the House of Commons, to date, there have only been 693 women MPs serve. The current Parliament includes 263 women, which is the highest representation ever, at 40%.
Nusrat is the 377th female MP to be elected to the House of Commons. She was the first female MP for Wealden when she was first elected in 2015 and was also the first female Muslim MP for the Conservative Party. In 2018, Nusrat made a bit of British history as the first female Muslim Minister to speak from the Dispatch Box, and in 2024 Nusrat became the first ethnic minority MP to serve in The Chair as Chairman of Ways and Means, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.
