Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed the news that new postal workers have been recruited by Royal Mail across East Sussex, to improve service levels in Wealden and across the county.
In the run up to Christmas 2023 and at the beginning of the new year, there were severe delays in postal deliveries across Wealden and especially in the Hailsham area, which Royal Mail stated were caused by high levels of staff sickness. To address this, Nusrat has been holding several meetings with senior representatives from Royal Mail, pushing for deployment of additional resources to Wealden improve the service, as well as for a plan for additional recruitment.
Royal Mail recently announced that 96 new postal workers have since been recruited across the 54 delivery offices that serve Sussex constituencies, including four at the Crowborough Delivery Office and five and the Hailsham Delivery Office. Mail deliveries to all addresses in the TN6, TN7 and BN27 postcode areas are taking place six days a week when there is mail to deliver.
The recruitment drive is ongoing with current vacancies advertised at https://jobs.royalmailgroup.com
Nusrat Ghani said: “I have been pushing Royal Mail for urgent improvements to local service following the severe delays in postal deliveries before Christmas and at the beginning of the year. I welcomed the additional resources and delivery days that have been put in place to clear the backlog of mail and resolve the situation in Hailsham. I’m pleased that the recruitment campaign has resulted in new postal workers joining the Crowborough and Hailsham Delivery Offices and I hope that this will ensure consistent and sustainable service levels all year round.”
