NFU Conference

Wealden MP Nus Ghani has raised the concerns and issues faced by Wealden’s diverse farming community with the National Farmers Union and the Government, ahead of the introduction of the new Agriculture Bill in the House of Commons this week.

Nus recently met with representatives from the NFU and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to push the concerns of Wealden farmers, after working closely with farmers from all over Wealden, from award-winning vineyards to community-owned organic farms.

The Government is introducing a new Agriculture Bill to the House of Commons this week, which will set farming policy as we leave the European Union. Nus raised issues such as rural crime, land payments and sustainability to make sure that Wealden’s agricultural communities are heard as policy develops.

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “Our farmers are a reliable and critical source of jobs, food supply and land management. It’s vital that Wealden’s farming communities are heard as we develop a farming policy for the 21st century.

“I was delighted to meet with the NFU and DEFRA to push the concerns of our farmers and make their voice heard.

“It’s very welcome news that the Government will listen to our rural communities to ensure that the Agriculture Bill works for Wealden and East Sussex, and I look forward to working with our farmers to make sure this happens.”

Championing our Farmers

Wealden is a beautiful place, with rolling countryside, stunning forests and energetic towns. Wealden is also home to many amazing farms, which are the lifeblood of rural life. I want to build a Rural Powerhouse, one known for its thriving small businesses, including its farms and vineyards, as for the beauty of its countryside.
