Maisie and Alison
Sewing Crow-Bees

I am delighted to announce the first recipients of the Wealden Hero Award, Maisie Jones and Alison Cousins.

Maisie began sewing face masks for the local community at the beginning of spring. Soon after, she was joined by Alison and together they began making fabric face masks for carers, key workers and volunteers in Crowborough. They became known as the “Sewing Crow-Bees”.

The purpose of these masks was to keep the community safe as well as fundraise for charities. The masks are being offered for free, but donations are welcome. Maisie and Alison first began fundraising for NHS Charities Together and quickly reached our target of £1,500 via a Facebook fundraiser page.

Meanwhile, they were gradually receiving more offers of support from other ladies in the area, to both sew and help make masks. The Sewing Crow-Bees are now a team of eighteen ladies and have raised over £8,000 through voluntary contributions. Their masks are available at local shops in Crowborough, and customers can choose from six different designs.

The Sewing Crow-Bees are currently fundraising for the Friends of Crowborough Hospital. You can donate through a Virgin Money fundraiser page, which has collected over £6000 in donations so far.

Many thanks and congratulations to Maisie and Alison! True heroes who have made a huge contribution to the community.

The Wealden Hero Awards are kindly supported by Uckfield FM, Kent and Sussex Courier, Sussex Express and Hailsham FM.
