Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has convened a meeting with representatives of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and Wealden farmers

It happened at a local farm in Fletching to thank them for the fantastic work they are doing to manage local environment and to listen to their concerns about rural crime.

Almost three quarters of land in Wealden is farmed, directly employing over 2,300 people, and contributing to the £1.25 billion generated by farmers across the South East annually. Wealden countryside is home to many exceptional family farms that play a key role in producing some of the best British products enjoyed in the UK as well as overseas.

At this meeting, local farmers from across Wealden had the opportunity to voice their concerns about rural crime, discuss the new agricultural policies that the Government is introducing as the UK moves from the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, and share views on the provision of livestock markets and abattoirs in East Sussex.

Nusrat has long been a champion for Wealden farmers, working with local press on a campaign advocating for Wealden supermarkets to focus on offering customers more of our quality, sustainably sourced local produce.

Nusrat Ghani said: “I regularly meet with Wealden farmers and NFU representatives, and it was a pleasure to convene this latest meeting in Fletching. I’m proud that we have a thriving and dynamic rural economy in Wealden, and I will always work to support our local farmers, who do not only provide fresh produce of the highest quality, but are also contributing a great deal to the community through education about the security of our food chain and job opportunities. We all depend on our farmers and I look forward to continuing working with the NFU and our farmers on how we can best support them and I will continue working with Sussex Police on a multi-agency response to tackle rural crime in Wealden.”

Wealden is a beautiful place, with rolling countryside, stunning forests and energetic towns. Wealden is also home to many amazing farms, which are the lifeblood of rural life. I want to build a Rural Powerhouse, one known for its thriving small businesses, including its farms and vineyards, as for the beauty of its countryside.
