Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, was pleased to visit Bewl Water reservoir to see the progress of the £30 million upgrades that Southern Water is currently undertaking.

The project involves the installation of three large hydraulic siphons, which will allow the water level of the reservoir to be reduced more quickly, if needed, for example to reduce high water levels during exceptionally heavy rainfall, or carry out repairs to the dam.

The project is well underway, with the expected completion of construction, mechanical and electrical works by the end of summer 2024, followed by a period of testing. Bewl Water will remain open to the public at all times, with any necessary diversions to pathways clearly signposted. Additionally, the grassland taken up by the project will be reinstated and accompanied by the creation of woodland, boggy hollows and tree planting.

Nusrat Ghani said: “I was pleased to visit Bewl Water reservoir to meet with project managers and Southern Water representatives to learn more about the upgrades currently taking place. The reservoir is a critical local and national asset and I welcome the £30 million investment which will not only ensure its longevity, but also that the reservoir’s water levels can be controlled more closely, enhancing flood prevention systems in the area and the security of the residents of neighbouring villages.”
