A Yellow Cold Health Alert has been issued for the Southeast until 12:00 on 18 January 2024.

Yellow Alert means there is probability of severe cold weather during this period. This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable people and disrupt the delivery of services.

The advice is as follows:

  • Heat your home to at least 18 degrees
  • Have plenty of warm food and drinks
  • Check on elderly neighbours and friends, and those ‘at risk’ by phone every day while the severe weather last

To sign up for alerts, please click here.

More information on Cold-Health Alerts is available here.

Stay safe on the roads as conditions may get icy. If you have to travel ensure your tyres are winter ready, slow down and maintain a safe distance. For more advice on winter driving from the East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, please click here.

Provision of additional services

East Sussex County Council:

  • ESCC is responsible for the highway winter service across Wealden. With a few exceptions, ESCC grits and maintains the highways, including most of the roads locally.
  • ESCC has primary and secondary gritting routes – when icy conditions are forecast they will grit primary routes first (including all A and B roads and some C roads). They provide a 24/7 gritting service, scheduling gritters based on weather forecasts and road surface temperatures.
  • You can find out more about ESCC’s work over the winter months at https://www.eastsussexhighways.com/our-services/winter-service.

Wealden District Council:

  • WDC is responsible for keeping towns clean and tidy – including clearing fallen leaves from the pavements. WDC also has some resources which it may deploy to assist its staff, tenants and the general public in snowy and icy conditions, including precautionary salting and gritting of WDC’s car parks as well as some pavements.
