Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed the news that 71.7% of Wealden now have access to Gigabit broadband, thanks to £5 billion Government investment.
In 2019, the Government announced Project Gigabit, which is a flagship £5 billion programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband. Thanks to the hard work of the telecoms industry and Government action, gigabit coverage across the UK has increased rapidly in recent years, with 71.7% of Wealden and 80% of the UK now having access to high-speed internet connectivity.
The Government is working with broadband suppliers to deliver its long-term plan to achieve at least 85% gigabit coverage of the UK by 2025, and nationwide coverage by 2030.
Nusrat Ghani said: “Reliable broadband is an absolute necessity for households, schools and businesses in Wealden and poor connectivity is one of the top issues for local residents. I have been relentless in my work to secure better infrastructure throughout the constituency and I’m pleased that Wealden is benefitting from Government investment as part of Project Gigabit, boosting its coverage of lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband to over 70%. This will not only accelerate growth and job opportunities, but also improve the quality of life for thousands of people across Wealden.”
