Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, Chairman of Ways and Means, Madam Deputy Speaker, congratulated the Youth Select Committee on what they had achieved with their Inquiry into the link between harmful online content and youth violence at the recent launch event in Parliament on 27 March.

The committee’s inquiry, launched November 2024, investigated links between social media and youth violence and sought to explore how social media firms allow the sharing of violent content, how they enforce age restrictions and the effectiveness of government policy in protecting children from harmful content online. Members of the Committee examined written evidence from young people across the UK and questioned expert individuals, youth organisations and politicians from inside Committee rooms in the House of Commons.

Nusrat commended the Committee members for pushing for the Online Safety Act to be amended and for their recommendation for more formal media literacy and online safety education in schools.

Reflecting her belief in the importance of youth participation in policy-making she stated: “We cannot work as a vacuum, even as your constituency MPs or as government - we need constant engagement with you. The work you're doing here won't just have an influence in this terriory, no doubt it will impact policy overseas. You've done yourselves proud with this report. You've done a fantastic job."
