Nus Ghani is one of five Members of Parliament to have been appointed to the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral Commission. Appointments to the Committee are made directly by the Speaker of the House of Commons, the Rt Hon John Bercow MP.
The Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral Commission is an independent, cross-party, committee which oversees the selection of individuals to be put forward for appointment as Electoral Commissioners and examines the work carried out by the Electoral Commission and the Local Government Boundary Commission for England.
Much of the work of the Speaker’s Committee will involve overseeing the boundary estimates made by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England. These proposed boundary changes will effect both local government and parliamentary constituency boundaries.
Commenting on her appointment, Ms Ghani said: “I am honoured to have been appointed to the Speaker’s Committee on the Electoral Commission. The work carried out by the Committee will have an important impact on the political map of the future; for example, estimates for parliamentary boundaries effect how we conduct democracy in our country and provide representation in Parliament.
I look forward to working closely with my colleagues from across the House in assisting in the important work carried out by the Electoral Commission and the Local Government Boundary Commission for England.”
