Campaigning to Improve Broadband

Wealden MP Nus Ghani has campaigned to improve the provision of broadband and data across Wealden since she was first elected in 2015.

Nus runs an annual survey of Wealden residents to gauge the current state of play of broadband speeds in Wealden, with the 2018 survey going out to thousands of constituents and generating a passionate response.

This year’s survey suggests that Wealden residents continue to be dissatisfied with the quality of their broadband speeds, with most people responding with a below-average satisfaction.

The average speed is just 60 per cent of what respondents are paying for, demonstrating poor delivery rates of promised speeds and connections. In addition, 40 per cent of respondents said they use their broadband connection for some form of professional use.

Nus has taken the results of the survey to Digital Secretary, Rt Hon Jeremy Wright MP, to stress the concerns of Wealden residents and ensure that greater rollout of rural broadband is at the top of the agenda.

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “While broadband speeds and availability have improved since 2015, there is still much more to do and the survey and my inbox clearly show just how important this issue is to my constituents.

“In 2018 broadband is no longer a luxury but a necessity, and with so many people depending on a reliable internet connection for professional purposes, be it in a school, business or a farm, this is more important now than ever before.

“I have pushed the Digital Secretary to speed up the rollout broadband in rural areas like Wealden, and I will continue to work with him and service providers like BT to improve my constituents’ access to the internet.”
