Nus Ghani Celebrates Latest Figures on Britain's Breast Cancer Survival Rates

Nus Ghani, Member of Parliament for Wealden, today welcomed the news that Breast cancer deaths are falling faster in Britain than in the rest of Europe as figures show dramatic improvement in the last decade.

The disease claims about 11,900 lives a year and is the second commonest form of cancer death among women after lung cancer.

Death rates this year will be below the EU average after an 18 percent drop since 2010. It means that by this year the UK will have experienced the highest percentage fall – 17.7% – in its death rate among Europe’s six most populous countries since 2010-14.

If Britain does see its death rate fall to 13.33 per 100,000 of population this year, this will put it slightly ahead of the EU average, which will be 13.36.

This figure also represents the greatest decline in the mortality rate for any of the 'Big Six' nations of The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland, Italy, and Spain: a significant achievement amongst these nations with already highly developed healthcare systems.

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said:

"From Wealden Constituents to friends & family, cancer is never far away. We must never be complacent, but this is good news as death rates for breast cancer are falling in the UK.

"In the 9 years since the Conservative Party came into power, the record levels of spending on the NHS, better organisation, screening, and care, have paid dividends in terms of patient outcomes, and this has rightly been acknowledged today.

"More needs to be done in order to cement our position as one of the global leaders for breast cancer treatment, but for today, all discussion should be focussed on heaping praise on our fantastic Doctors, Nurses, and NHS support staff, without whom this success could not be possible.

"I am in awe of the work that they do. From the bottom of my heart: Thank You."
