L-R: Nick Kehoe, Site Manager (Westridge Construction); Rob Woolley, CEO Hospice In The Weald; Holly Cowen, Head Nurse for the Cottage Hospice; and, Nusrat Ghani MP.

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, visited the site of a new Cottage Hospice in Five Ashes, Mayfield.

The site, being developed by Hospice In The Weald, a registered charity, aims to provide an environment in which family caregivers can continue to care for their loved ones in the last weeks or days of life.

Nus met with members of the Hospice in The Weald team and was given a tour, where they explained their vision for a hospice that allows more patients to access compassionate, individualised, supportive and holistic care when they are unable to remain at home.

They explained how Cottage Hospice will be run by highly skilled, trained volunteers supported by nursing staff, and that, as with all Hospice in the Weald Services, anyone who needs to access the service will be able to do so free of charge.

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, said:

“I have been a patron of Hospice in the Weald for many years, and have passionately supported the Cottage Hospice since its initial planning permission application in 2015.

“It was one of the first local projects I was able to get involved with as a newly-elected MP.

“Being able to see how the project has developed is particularly heartening, as the Hospice will soon be able to provide sensitive end-of-life care, in an environment close to home for its patients, with a service focussed on both clinical and emotional support.

“Wealden District has the oldest average age in the country, so any further provision that gives residents choice on how to care for family and loved ones is very welcome.

“I am very much looking forward to returning for the official opening of the Hospice, and will be monitoring the progress of the construction closely.”
