Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, is celebrating British food and farming on Back British Farming Day, recognising the crucial role farmers play in producing food for the nation and caring for the countryside.

The UK food and farming industry is worth more than £120 billion to the national economy and employs more than 4 million people.

Nus Ghani said: “Farmers are the lifeblood of Wealden’s economy. Thanks to Wealden farmers and the wider food supply chain, we were able to ensure our local village stores, as well as supermarket shelves were kept stocked throughout the coronavirus pandemic and the nation was fed during this difficult time. I am very grateful for all that they have done and continue to do.”

“I work with a number of local farmers’ groups, I hold meetings with the Conservative Rural Affairs Group, of which I was the chair, and I regularly discuss the undervalued role of local food production industry with the National Farmers Union. I will always champion local farmers and I am delighted that they will be able to capitalise on the opportunities that are being opened up by the series of free trade agreements.”

Wealden is a beautiful place, with rolling countryside, stunning forests and energetic towns. Wealden is also home to many amazing farms, which are the lifeblood of rural life. I want to build a Rural Powerhouse, one known for its thriving small businesses, including its farms and vineyards, as for the beauty of its countryside.
