Wealden MP Nus Ghani has met with Sussex Police to discuss residents ongoing concerns over dog theft.

Increases in pet crime, particularly dog theft have been widely reported across the UK and Nus met with Sussex Police to seek assurances after being contacted by several residents.

Op Collar was launched earlier this year, led by the Rural Crime Team to help prevent dog thefts across Wealden. The team are working to identify those responsible for local pet crime and to reunite dogs with their owners.

A number of incidents reported as theft include missing dogs, which are not reported correctly when found – which can lead to misinformation. 31 thefts were reported by Sussex Police in 2020 but it’s understood at least 12 were disputes over dog ownership.

Nus Ghani said, “Pet theft is a dreadful crime, causing great distress to owners and the animals. Whilst I was pleased to learn that dog theft is not a widespread issue in Wealden, I appreciate that incidents have been on the rise across the country, increasing fear amongst dog owners. I am grateful to the Rural Crime Team for their hard work to keep our pets and our communities safe and I am pleased that the Government is currently reviewing the issue of pet theft and opportunities for tougher penalties.”
