Wealden Conservatives

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed representatives of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) to two farms in Wealden to demonstrate the fantastic work that Wealden farmers are doing to manage local environment and educate the next generations about the importance of agriculture and food security.

The NFU recently published a new report, which demonstrates how farming and agriculture can be used effectively in the classroom to deliver crucial science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) lessons through real world examples. Nusrat hosted the NFU delegation at Primrose Farm in Upper Dicker near Hailsham and Hodore Farm in Upper Hartfield to showcase what Wealden farmers do help to bring schoolchildren closer to the farming community.

Peter Appleton is a third-generation dairy farmer whose family care for 450 milking cows on Primrose Farm near Hailsham. The farm also co-hosts a bluebell walk trail which attracts 23,000 visitors annually and has already raised in excess of £1m for local charities. Peter and his wife Jackie are passionate about teaching children about where their food comes from and host “Open Farm Days” for schools or families to enjoy.

Charlie Munn’s Hodore Farm in Upper Hartfield spans across 400 acres of arable land as well as 60 acres of woodland where a forest school has been recently set up. The forest school provides the space to experience connections with the woodland and opportunities for people to learn about, engage with and conserve the natural environment. Nusrat Ghani said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the NFU team in Wealden and showcase our local farmers' hard work and innovative ways to teach our future generations about farming.

"Our farmers are the lifeblood of rural life, and they are doing a tremendous work in managing local environment and helping our communities to better understand agriculture, where our food comes from and about the security of our food chain. I’m proud that we have a thriving and dynamic rural economy in Wealden, and I will always work to support our local farmers.I look forward to working with the NFU and our farmers on bringing schoolchildren closer to the farming community.”

Wealden is a beautiful place, with rolling countryside, stunning forests and energetic towns. Wealden is also home to many amazing farms, which are the lifeblood of rural life. I want to build a Rural Powerhouse, one known for its thriving small businesses, including its farms and vineyards, as for the beauty of its countryside.
