Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has helped table an amendment to the Nationality and Borders Bill, which would give Hongkongers with at least one BN(O) parent access to the BN(O) visa scheme. Currently the UK's widely praised BN(O) scheme only covers Hong Kongers born before 1997 - leaving a significant number of those who took part in the peaceful protests throughout 2019 unable to access the programme.
This amendment has been described by Hong Kongers in Britain as:
a highly important step in ensuring that asylum-seekers from Hong Kong – those who have fought heavily for freedom and democracy on the frontlines and are fleeing for safety and protection in the UK, as well as Hongkongers who are struggling to access proper statuses and channels of support from the UK – will receive a much- needed lifeline and helping hand by means of a more formalised channel to stay in the UK, in order for them to rebuild their lives, settle and integrate into the country. Should the bill be selected and passed in Parliament, it would be a significant and reinforced recognition of the immense sacrifices and struggles Hongkongers have made in the pro- democracy movements, by defending the fundamental values and principles that are so dearly treasured, shared and cherished between the people of UK and Hong Kong.
