Uckfield Men's Shed

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has visited Uckfield Men’s Shed to meet some of its members and learn more about their work and projects in the community.

Men’s Sheds (or Sheds) are a nationwide organisation that aim to tackle social isolation of men, especially those who have retired, by providing an opportunity to meet others in a friendly atmosphere, and to learn, share or improve DYI skills while promoting their mental health and wellbeing.

Uckfield Men's Shed is based at the Oaks Workshops on Blackboys Road in Framfield and offers a well-equipped carpentry workshop, a model making room, a wood store, and a large reception area for socialising. It is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am-4pm and shedders are involved in various projects, including making planters, bird boxes and mud kitchens, while repairing, upcycling and learning new skills. The majority of the materials and tools used are recycled, so any donations from the public are warmly received.

Nusrat Ghani said: “I was pleased to visit the Uckfield Men’s Shed to meet the fantastic team and learn more about their work. The Shed is a great project, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds, and it offers a supportive and creative opportunity to share skills to repair or upcycle items that can be re-used by the community. I am pleased that we have a number of Sheds in Wealden to help tackle loneliness and isolation. I opened the Mayfield Shed last year and I’m also supporting the Men’s Shed team in Groombridge in fundraising for a permanent facility.”
