Uyghur event

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, was a panelist at Dangerous Liaisons: UK partnerships with Chinese policing institutions linked to crimes against humanity in Xinjiang event on 15 June 2022.

In May 2022, Freedom from Torture published their new report “Dangerous Liaisons: UK partnerships with Chinese policing institutions linked to crimes against humanity in Xinjiang” (available here), shedding light on UK risking contributing to egregious human rights violations carried out under Beijing’s brutal policies.

The report details relationships of UK business, the UK government and the UK Police Service that are linked to atrocities in Xinjiang. It indicates that the UK government and UK business are failing to adequately address concerns previously raised by the Foreign Affairs Committee’s 2021 report, “Never Again: The UK’s responsibility to act on atrocities in Xinjiang and beyond”.

The panel reflected on the risks that ‘Global Britain’ must acknowledge and address in all engagement with countries where there are grave human rights concerns in order to avoid contributing to the harms it publicly condemns.

The was chaired by Baroness Kennedy of The Shaws QC and included speeches from Nusrat Ghani MP, about the work of the Uyghur APPG and other work on shedding light on the situation of the Uyghurs; Roslyn Rennie, about the findings of the report and how is the UK implicated in the atrocities against the Uyghurs; Rahima Mahmut, about the reception of the findings by the Uyghur community and what kind of responses the community expects from the UK Government in light of these damning findings.
