Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed the announcement that hundreds of thousands of pounds have been passed on to town and parish councils by Wealden District Council to support much needed infrastructure and leisure facilities.

Each year councils across the Wealden district are passed Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) payments, which are funds paid by developers to contribute towards providing much needed facilities for the communities in the area. Spending by many of the town and parish councils has seen improvements ranging from new equipment in playgrounds to a roadway being reconstructed.

Over the past year the parish and town councils have spent £414,300 on infrastructure projects throughout the district. These include £77,872 on community buildings, £53,341 on highways works, and £33,425 on drainage works and £35,093 on provision of new and repairs to recreational facilities for all age groups. The possible uses for CIL are wide and far reaching and can also be used on speed watch schemes, transport links and infrastructure, street lighting, footpaths CCTV, allotments and others.

Nusrat Ghani said: “CIL payments help pay for vital infrastructure that is needed where developments are taking place. These payments are a legal commitment by developers and can be used on infrastructure improvements in local areas. I am pleased that Wealden District Council has distributed hundreds of thousands of pounds amongst town and parish councils to assist with targeted improvements for local residents.”
