Nusrat Ghani meeting Delves family to discuss cheese vending machine

I recently met third generation dairy farmers in Waldron who turned their hand to cheesemaking and have their very own 24-hour cheese vending machine. The Delves family pride their herd of dairy cows and operate a high-welfare farm in Waldron, proudly accredited by the Vegetarian Society and Compassion in World Farming.

Who doesn’t love cheese? The Delves family have now made it easier than ever to get your cheese fix with their 24-hour cheese vending machine. Hearing about their cheese-making business has been an eye-opener. Turning the milk from their own dairy herd into delicious cheese takes many months. I witnessed first-hand the process of turning and brushing the cheeses and got to have a go at packing one of their famous cheddars. They have a growing customer base, with people travelling for hours for their cheese selection, to providing cheese wheels and produce for weddings and celebrations. They’re even on the menu at The Star Inn, in Waldron, with plans to appear on other local menus.

Local businesses need our support more than ever and I am always calling on the government to better support our rural businesses. Many of our farmers are having a tough time, especially given the hot weather and water issues, however, I’m so pleased to see this great example of how a local business has diversified and captured the hearts and tastebuds of a new market.

Backing Local Businesses and High Streets

This Government has already put together a package to help small businesses – Keeping corporation tax down, reducing National Insurance contribution to access to start up loans. Britain’s economy is growing faster than any other economy in Europe, with 760,000 more businesses created since 2010 and 2 million new apprenticeships.

Championing our Farmers

Wealden is a beautiful place, with rolling countryside, stunning forests and energetic towns. Wealden is also home to many amazing farms, which are the lifeblood of rural life. I want to build a Rural Powerhouse, one known for its thriving small businesses, including its farms and vineyards, as for the beauty of its countryside.
