Buxted Football Club supported by Wealden MP in plea for new defibrillator

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden is urging people to help Buxted Football Club in its fundraising efforts for a new defibrillator and to pay for training in its use. This follows the ruthless vandalism recently when two people were caught on CCTV completely destroying the vital equipment.

The footage has been widely shared and a 17-year-old boy has since been released on bail for causing criminal damage.

South East Coast Ambulance have kindly loaned a temporary replacement, but a fundraising appeal has been launched to purchase a new one and raise awareness about how to use the equipment.

Nusrat met with Buxted FC Chairman Richard Turner to learn more about the fundraiser and was joined by the Leader of Wealden District Council, Bob Standley. Buxted FC has received many kind offers of donations for a new defibrillator, but the wall box still needs repairing.

The club would also like to turn the incident into a positive and to run a series of public training sessions to highlight the importance of defibrillators, train CPR and the safe use of Automated External Defibrillators. They are looking for assistance from the public to cover these costs. Buxted FC is also hoping to host a charity match on Saturday, August 7 when anyone is welcome to join.

Nusrat Ghani said: “This mindless act of vandalism is sickening. I’m pleased that due to the tremendous response and support from the public, Sussex Police were able to identify the culprit promptly. Buxted FC are a great local Club and I’m pleased that they’re turning this awful experience into a fantastic opportunity to educate the public on the importance of this life-saving equipment.

"In rural communities like ours where professional help may be a while away, it is absolutely vital that we know how to use a defibrillator in time of need. If you can, please support Buxted FC in reaching their fundraising goal.”
