Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, celebrates a record number of new NHS workers, with over 3,000 new doctors and nurses in the South East.
The latest NHS workforce figures show that from March 2019 to March 2020, the number of nurses working in the NHS in England increased by over 12,000, and the number of doctors increased by over 6,600.
There are now over 48,000 more people working in the NHS in England than there were in March 2019.
In the South East, there were over 3,000 more doctors and nurses working for the NHS in March 2020. Broken down, this means that compared to March 2019 there are 825 more doctors (an increase of 5.2%), and 2,204 more nurses (an increase of 5.8%) serving the South East.
These figures are from March, before the thousands of former healthcare professionals bravely volunteered to return to the frontline to support the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic.
The numbers represent a great step towards achieving the Government’s commitment to increase the numbers of nurses in the NHS by 50,000 over the course of this Parliament.
Nus Ghani said: “The coronavirus pandemic has made clear that the incredible staff of our health service provide an invaluable public service. I cannot thank enough all the frontline NHS workers, in Wealden and across the South East, for their tremendous efforts in fighting the virus and saving lives. I am delighted that across the South East, we now have more than 3,000 new doctors and nurses. Their dedication and efforts are cherished by everyone in Wealden.”
