Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, has visited Uckfield College
She was there to speak to the Sixth Form students about her role as Member of Parliament and about her local campaigns.
At a full Sixth Form assembly, Nus spoke to Uckfield College students about the role of legislators, her journey to the House of Commons, and her current international, national, and local campaigns, before opening the floor to questions from students.
Nus was accompanied by Uckfield County Councillor Claire Dowling, whom the students also engaged in discussion about transport issues in Wealden and quizzed on representation at district and county level.
The students dispelled any myths about political disengagement amongst the younger generations and showed lively interest in current affairs, with discussion topics ranging from the current crisis in Ukraine, Nusrat’s role as UK representative to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and encouraging more women to run for Parliament.
Nus Ghani said: “It was fantastic to be back at Uckfield College and speak to such engaged group of students and their teachers. Getting our young residents interested in the workings of our democracy is a vital part of my work as an MP and I’ve always pledged to open up Parliament to the next generation of leaders. I was impressed by the questions from the floor, and I hope that our discussion will inspire and encourage the students to consider a role in public service.”
Claire Dowling, County Councillor for Uckfield said: “It was a very interesting visit accompanying Nus and listening to the questions and comments from sixth formers at Uckfield College.”
