Nus Ghani, the MP for Wealden, joined in the celebrations at Bridge Cottage in Uckfield to mark the opening of the Women of Wealden Suffrage Exhibition.

The exhibition, hosted by Bridge Cottage with support from community groups including Nus Ghani, chronicles and commemorates the centenary of women getting the vote for the first time.

The exhibition will run from May 21st through to June 2nd, and feature a wide variety of community projects and events exploring the fascinating story of the women of Wealden who campaigned for female suffrage a hundred years ago.

To launch the exhibition, Bridge Cottage supports dressed up as suffragettes from a hundred years ago, waving replicas of the banners the suffragettes used to demonstrate their cause.

Alongside Nus were vice-chair of Wealden District Council Pam Doodes, Bridge Cottage chairman Mick Harker, Avril Davis, as well as Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre manager Liz Penton and education officers Maria Kirk and Nicola Stewart.

Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “I am honoured to be the first female MP for Wealden, and without the bravery and the determination of the suffragettes, that would never be possible.

“By celebrating the women who fought so hard for women to be able to vote, I hope to pay homage to their sacrifice and courage. They’ve laid the framework for women in all walks of life.

“We have our second female Prime Minister, 30 per cent of MPs are women, and the Duchess of Sussex declares herself a feminist on the royal website.

“There is still more to be done in advancing the cause of women, and I hope to play my part.

“To that end, the exhibition at Bridge Cottage will bring the enthusiasm and tenacity of the suffragette movement to a new generation of future female leaders across Wealden and East Sussex.”
