Nus Ghani has added her name to the British Beer & Pub Association’s list of MPs who are supportive of brewing and pubs in the UK. This sector is a major contributor to both the national and local community, with pubs and brewing accounting for almost 900,000 jobs across Britain.
Nus is dedicated to ensuring that the 78 pubs and 8 breweries which are based in Wealden will continue to thrive. Pubs and breweries contribute a huge amount locally, both to the economy and to the social life of the community. Each year this industry invests £2.5m into the local economy and it provides 1,422 local jobs in Wealden, many of which go to young people. Furthermore, pubs play an important role as social hubs, providing a space for friends and families to gather. Our local pubs act as a venue for a diverse range of events: from concerts to car-boot sales.
Last year Nus surveyed every pub in the constituency in order to find out more about the challenges facing the industry and she met with pub landlords across the constituency to discuss their queries and concerns in person. In March of this year Nus introduced a new bill in the House of Commons that sought to ensure that British embassies and consulates overseas purchased and served English wines at events. Nus will continue to support locally produced beer and wine in this Parliamentary session.
Commenting on the brewing and pubs sector, Ms Ghani said: “Pubs are social hubs across Wealden and provide local jobs in the food and drinks sector and are often the heart of a village or town community. I have been working with local pubs to help encourage locals to eat and drink locally and on a national level I have been campaigning to tackle beer duty. I will continue campaigning for pubs and breweries and continue pulling pints in Wealden’s superb pubs.”
