Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, spoke during the Trade Bill on 22 March 2021 to urge MPs to support the Genocide Amendment. During her speech, Nus raised the plight of the Uyghur, who would be excluded under the Government's proposed Neill amendment, and asked the Government to make sure the UK did not end up with two-tiered genocide policy.

The vote was incredibly close; the Genocide Amendment was narrowly defeated by 18 votes. The campaign scored significant victories:

  1. The announcement of five sanctions against key Chinese officials and corporations involved in Xinjiang, China
  2. The creation of a Select Committee to assess genocide

The sanction against Chinese officials were announced earlier in the day by the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab during an hour-long statement.

The Trade Bill now returns to the Lords for debate on 25 March 2021.
