Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, Chairman of Ways & Means, and Madam Deputy Speaker, is proud to have joined Mr Speaker at a reception at Speaker's House in celebration of South Asian Heritage Month.
South Asian Heritage Month takes place annually from July 18th to August 17th as is a time to celebrate the diverse cultures, histories, and communities of South Asia, as well as the strong ties between the UK and South Asia. The month also recognises the contributions of people of South Asian heritage to the UK.
The specific dates of July 18th to August 17th were chosen to align with the South Asian solar calendar and incorporate significant dates like India's Independence Day (August 15th) and Partition Commemoration Day (August 17th).
South Asian Heritage Month aims to commemorate, mark, and celebrate the rich and diverse heritage of South Asia, including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
The 2025 theme is Roots to Routes, exploring the rich journey of growth, and the evolving connections made through generations.
Nusrat was delighted to be one of the keynote speakers and share her experiences and journey as the first female MP to represent Wealden constituency since 2015, the first female Muslim MP for the Conservative Party, the first female Muslim Minister to speak from the Dispatch Box, and the first ethnic minority MP to serve in The Chair as Chairman of Ways and Means, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons.
