Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, is delighted to offer her warmest congratulations to the Founder and Co-Chairman of Hailsham’s charity Medi Tech Trust, Bob Lewis, on receiving a Local Hero Award for the South East region.

Churchill Living Local Hero Awards celebrate and recognise the everyday heroes over 60 who are going above and beyond in their local area and making a real difference in their communities.

Since the spring, nominations have been open to volunteers, fundraising champions and those who simply show up day after day with kindness, compassion and care. Finally, at the end of September a ceremony took place at Allingham Lodge where the winners have been announced.

It is wonderful news that the Co-Chair and Founder of Hailsham charity Medi Tech Trust Bob Lewis has scooped up the award for the South East region.

Medi Tech Trust is a small charity based in Hailsham, promoting medial recycling by collecting unwanted medical equipment which is then distributed locally to those who need it in East Sussex as well as to low-income countries with accompanying training programmes enabling local doctors and health staff to use it.

Nusrat was proud to become a Patron of the charity earlier this year and she continues supporting the Trustees in expanding their reach across GP surgeries and medical facilities across the South East.

Nusrat Ghani said: Medi Tech Trust is a unique Hailsham-based charity, carrying out important work enabling the community to recycle unused and unwanted medical supplies; by donating equipment to hospitals and surgeries both in East Sussex and globally, and providing vital training to surgeons overseas. Having founded the charity, Bob is a shining example of a Local Hero and I’m delighted that his ongoing, tireless work and positive contribution continues to be recognised and celebrated across the country. I’m proud to be supporting Medi Tech Trust volunteers and Trustees as a Patron and I continue working with them on ensuring that more medical facilities in Sussex Weald and across the UK can participate and support this important cause.”

Bob Lewis (pictured below) said: “I had no idea that I had been recommended for a Churchill Local Hero Award, so when my wife told me, that came as a wonderful surprise. I set up the Medi Tech Trust over 20 years ago as a way to do something positive and help those who need our support. I never expected it to grow into such a big part of my life, and I could never have done it without the support of our wonderful team of people.”
