Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, was pleased to meet with Wealden resident Kate Valentine to present her with the Prime Minister's Points of Light Award.

The Prime Minister's Points of Light is a daily award programme first launched in April 2014 to recognise outstanding individuals making a positive change within their community and inspiring others. Each weekday, someone, somewhere in the country is selected to receive the award to celebrate their remarkable achievements. Kate Valentine from Forest Row is the 2287th recipient of this award.

Kate’s own experience of postnatal depression and anxiety led her to set up ‘Singing Mamas’ in 2010, a singing group open to any woman to join. The group has been hugely successful and has since grown into a UK-wide charity supporting the wellbeing of thousands of women and young mothers through singing. Kate has trained more than 200 women across the globe to deliver the ‘Singing Mamas’ approach in their own community.

Groups now reach thousands of women and children every week across 8 countries and 50 UK local authorities, with the mission to have a group in every local authority in the UK. ‘Singing Mamas’ also runs leadership focused singing programmes, has developed the UK’s first digital singing on prescription service, and has partnered with Liverpool Women’s hospital to develop a singing at home for maternal wellbeing programme.

Nusrat Ghani said: “I’m incredibly grateful for all the work that our charities and fantastic volunteers are doing to support our communities and I’m delighted that Kate’s outstanding work with Singing Mamas has been recognised by the Prime Minister’s Points of Light Award. Singing Mamas is a wonderful group supporting hundreds of women not only in our local communities in Wealden, but also nationwide and across the globe, improving their physical and mental wellbeing and resilience through singing. It was a privilege to present Kate with the Points of Light Award on behalf of the Prime Minister and convey my warmest congratulations to her for putting Wealden on the map with this far-reaching exceptional initiative.”
