The Seafarers’ Charity – which provides global support for seafarers and their families – has announced that the Rt Hon Nusrat Ghani MP will join as a vice president later in 2025.
Nusrat Ghani is currently the senior Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons, Chairman of Ways and Means, and MP for Sussex Weald. She previously served in the Department of Transport as the minister responsible for maritime.
Ms. Ghani will also speak at the charity’s upcoming ‘Waves of Influence’ lunch event on 09 July at Fishmongers’ Hall, which will focus on celebrating women in the maritime sector.
Her responsibilities as minister for maritime included leading the introduction of the Maritime2050 plan. She drove the UK’s successful campaign that secured a landmark global commitment at the International Maritime Organisation to reduce global shipping emissions by 50%.
The Seafarers’ Charity awards millions of pounds’ worth of grants every year to frontline organisations around the world that support the welfare and safety of seafarers. In 2024 it granted £2.6m, helping more than 650,000 seafarers across the Merchant Navy, Royal Navy, fishing fleets and more.
“Seafarers make such a huge contribution to the UK, and around the world. They keep supply chains running, protect our interests, and are a real part of our history. Seafarers are unseen key workers who can also struggle with challenges around mental health caused by pressures from being away from home for long periods of time and I’m keen to do what I can to support our seafarers and the charity in its vital work.“
