Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, has called on Wealden District Council’s Green & Lib Dem Leaders to get behind a key effort to stop the Home Office using Crowborough Training Camp as Asylum Accommodation.
Her call comes after the High Court gave permission to proceed to a full hearing to the Judicial Review brought by Crowborough Shield which is challenging the Home Office’s use of Crowborough Training Camp as asylum accommodation. It is expected to be heard by the High Court over one and a half days, with the Judge ordering it be done before the end of July.
Crowborough Shield CIC resubmitted their application for a Judicial Review of the Home Office decision to use Crowborough Training Camp on 9th March 2026. Yet the Green/Lib Dem/Labour Coalition running Wealden District Council had already sought to sabotage this work by announcing the Council would not take part in or support any further legal proceedings seeking to challenge the Home Office’s use of Crowborough Training Centre. This included the Council’s Green Party Deputy Leader Cllr Rachel Millward posting a video online dismissing the chances of success and insultingly accusing campaigners of offering “false hope”.
Now the local MP Nusrat Ghani, an outspoken campaigner against the use of Crowborough Training Centre by the Home Office, has written to the District Council’s leadership urging them to think again.
Nusrat Ghani said: “I am delighted to hear that Crowborough Shield have got permission to proceed with their Judicial Review. Their action is a vital part of standing up for our community and I have been pleased to support them in their work. It’s now time for the Green and Lib Dem leaders of Wealden District Council to put their political ideology to one side and back this action for the sake of local residents.”
