Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, was pleased to welcome Hailsham charity Medi Tech Trust to Westminster for a tour of the Houses of Parliament and meeting with the Secretary of State for Health, Wes Streeting.
Medi Tech Trust is a small charity based in Hailsham, collecting unwanted medical equipment which is then distributed to low-income countries, with accompanying training programmes enabling local doctors and health staff to use it. By promoting medical recycling, Medi Tech Trust is contributing to the welfare of many patients across the world including in Africa and Asia, supplying medical equipment that would otherwise be unavailable to them.
During their Westminster visit, the Medi Tech Trust founding team had the opportunity to meet the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Wes Streeting and introduce the valuable work that the charity does across Sussex Weald and East Sussex. Medi Tech Trust is one of only two charities in the UK carrying out this work and was awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2021.
Nusrat was proud to become a Patron of the charity earlier this year and she continues supporting the Trustees in expanding their reach across GP surgeries and medical facilities across the South East.

Nusrat Ghani said: “Medi Tech Trust is a unique Hailsham-based charity, making a huge contribution to the welfare of many patients across the world. It was a pleasure to welcome them to Westminster so they could pitch to the Health Secretary how they prevent unused medical equipment from going to landfill by encouraging GP practices and the general public to recycle this equipment when it is no longer needed by patients, and distributing it to front line staff in overseas hospitals including in Ukraine. I’m proud to be supporting Medi Tech Trust volunteers and Trustees as a Patron and I continue working with them on ensuring that more medical facilities in Sussex Weald and across the UK can participate and support this important cause.”
Founder Bob Lewis said: “Our Patron Nusrat Ghani MP made the day even more special by arranging a brief meeting with Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. We explained how Medi Tech Trust was collecting masses of costly unused but not needed medical supplies that patients cannot return to the NHS or supplier, which we recycle and donate to those in need, both locally in East Sussex and overseas. Since October we have donated supplies worth nearly £3 million. We also mentioned our overseas medical training programme for low income countries which we started nearly two decades ago.”
