Rotherfield St Martin

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, is supporting this year’s national Dementia Action Week, helping to raise awareness about dementia and dementia diagnosis.

There are thousands of people who are in the dark about their diagnosis as many don’t know the signs to spot. Dementia Action Week 2023, which is the Alzheimer’s Society’s biggest and longest running awareness campaign, is taking place this week (15-21 May), and is focussing on the importance of dementia diagnosis, reminding people that symptoms such as memory loss are not a natural part of ageing.

It is estimated that there are over 11,100 people currently living with dementia in East Sussex. Nusrat has been working in partnership with local community-led charity Rotherfield St Martin to help make Wealden more dementia-friendly and to raise awareness about the support available in Rotherfield and surrounding areas.

The Wealden Dementia Action Alliance has issued a booklet listing activities and special events designed for people living with dementia and their families and carers. To find out more, please visit http://www.wealden.gov.uk/dementia.

Nusrat Ghani said: “Since 2015, I have been a Dementia Friend, an initiative run by Alzheimer’s Society, and I previously chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Older People. I regularly meet with AgeUK and Alzheimer’s Society to get an update on their work in Wealden, and I am pleased to be working with fantastic Wealden charities including Rotherfield St Martin, ENGAge in Hadlow Down and Age We Care Horam, who are providing support locally. During this year's Dementia Action Week, please take a moment to learn more about dementia and reflect on what small changes you can make to make your community a more understanding and caring environment.”
