Nusrat Ghani, MP for Sussex Weald, was pleased to meet with Hellingly Parish Council Clerk Jenny Hoodless and Cllr Doug Lewin to discuss the state of roads in the village and what projects are underway to secure improvements.
Discussions centred particularly around the issues surrounding Park Road, which is a heavily used major artery connecting the old village with the new site of Hailsham Primary Academy, and Upper Horsebridge Road. Apart from the road surface being constantly eroded by traffic, the road is currently too narrow and has no pedestrian crossing from the development to access the school.
To increase public safety, the Parish Council is therefore conducting reports and pursuing the matter with Highways and Wealden District Council, inquiring whether the road could be widened, and resurfaced with new road markings and traffic calming measures put in place.
Nusrat Ghani said: “I know from my inbox that potholes and road conditions are one of the major concerns of local residents. I was pleased to meet with Cllr Lewin and Jenny Hoodless to discuss what more can be done for Hellingly, and I will continue supporting them and Parish Council Chair Cllr David White in making representations to local authorities and developers over their responsibilities to maintain Park Road and fix the many issues with potholes there. Since 2023, I also continue working regularly with Hellingly Parish Council on holding local agencies to account over works to prevent flooding and sewage overspills and we continue pushing for full review of current infrastructure provision and assessment of the necessary upgrades.”
