Nusrat Ghani takes part in debate on Yazidi genocide

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, today took part in a Westminster Hall Debate on the Yazidi Genocide.

She made two points - first, the Uyghur Tribunal has an intent to destroy the Yazidis, which is one of the five Genocide Convention markers of genocide. Nusrat quoted what Daesh have said themselves on this matter, in their 'perverted view of Islamic faith'.

Second, Nusrat raised the point that she hoped the Minister responding to the debate would not refer to the British Government's holding line of genocide being a matter for competent courts only to decide. She noted that this was not true -  the International Court of Justice’s Bosnia and Herzegovina v Serbia and Montenegro 2007 changed the game. The ICJ's 2007 ruling was:

that “a State’s “obligation to prevent, and the corresponding duty to act, arise at the instant that the State learns of, or should normally have learned of, the existence of a serious risk that genocide will be committed.”

You can watch Nusrat make that point here.
