Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, has welcomed an additional £880,000 for Sussex Police to go towards Violence Reduction Unit, which works to reduce serious violence.

A special unit designed to help tackle serious violence and prevent young people in Sussex from being drawn into it will receive a boost of £880,000. The Violence Reduction Unit, which brings together organisations across local communities to tackle violent crime and address its underlying causes, and provides funding for vital local projects doing positive preventative work with children and young people.

This investment is part of the extra £35.5 million announced for police forces in 18 areas across England and Wales. The allocation brings the total funding targeted at violent crime up to £105 million.

Since their set up, Violence Reduction Units, have already supported more than 100,000 young people, more than 51,000 of whom were identified as potentially high-risk of being involved in criminal and violent activity.

They also helped bring police, education leaders, health workers and local government together to share information about the causes of violence and agree a co-ordinated plan of action to tackle it, which is crucial to preventing crime at a local level. This additional funding means that they can continue this vital work.

Nus Ghani said: “Wealden is a great place to live and has consistently low levels of crime. Despite this, there have been incidents of violent crime that has been robbing our young people of their futures. I am incredibly grateful to Sussex Police for their ongoing hard work and dedication and I am pleased that the force will receive an extra £880,000 to help bring together organisations across our community to tackle violent crime and address its underlying causes. These vital resources will ensure that Sussex Police can continue keeping our young residents away from crime and keeping our communities safe.”
