The Rotherfield St Martin charity and Wealden Dementia Action Alliance are working closely with Wealden MP Nusrat Ghani to raise awareness about dementia during this year’s Dementia Awareness Week.

Rotherfield St Martin (RSM) is a community-led charity that provides support for older people living in Rotherfield and surrounding areas. There are currently over 10,000 people living with dementia in East Sussex.

National Dementia Awareness Week runs from May 17 to May 23 and Rotherfield St Martin (RSM) are organising a range of activities encouraging people to learn more about dementia, break down the stigma and spread awareness about the support available through the charity.

Nusrat is supporting Rotherfield in becoming a truly dementia-friendly community and has signed up to the Wealden Dementia Action Alliance’s Dementia Charter, which commits organisations and businesses to making small, dementia friendly changes. This will not only benefit those living with Dementia but also their families, safe in the knowledge that their loved ones are surrounded by a community that understands.

Nusrat Ghani said: “During this national Dementia Awareness Week, please take a moment to reflect on what small changes you can make to make your Wealden community a more understanding and caring environment. Rotherfield St Martin are a fantastic local charity and I am proud that Wealden is leading the way in making our communities dementia friendly.

“Since 2015, I have been a Dementia Friend, an initiative run by Alzheimer’s UK, and I previously chaired the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Older People. I have already signed up to the Dementia Charter and I hope many businesses and organisations will follow suit. Rotherfield St Martin have set up a Dementia Information table in the foyer of the Memorial Institute in Rotherfield. You can visit them this week to learn more about how you can become a Dementia Friend.”
