Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has visited Frant CoE Primary School to speak to Year 5 and 6 pupils about how laws are made in Westminster, and her duties and responsibilities as Member of Parliament.

On the day of Nusrat’s visit, the pupils were learning about the Second World War and were keen to showcase their period costumes and pieces of equipment, as well as discuss the role of women in the war. The class also quizzed Nusrat on her journey to Parliament, her responsibilities, the hardest parts of the role of an MP and the process of passing Bills through the Commons and the Lords.

The pupils were particularly interested in the current action on climate change, protecting the environment and clean transport, which are some of Nusrat’s priorities in Wealden. Nusrat was as also keen to hear from students about their participation at a recent tree planting, as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative.

Nusrat Ghani said: “It was an absolute pleasure to visit the fantastic Year 5 and 6 pupils at Frant CoE Primary School for a Q&A session about the workings of our democracy and parliamentary system. I regularly visit Wealden schools and it is always encouraging to see our young residents engaging in local issues and eager to make a positive contribution to their local area. I was impressed how courteous the students were while passionately expressing their views and there were some excellent suggestions for new laws which I will consider taking forward.”
