Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, was delighted to support the popular Sussex Sixes football tournament hosted by Uckfield Grasshoppers and open the Girls session held on Saturday 13th May.
Celebrating its 31st year this spring, the Sussex Sixes has become a popular regular fixture in the town, bringing together over 250 junior teams of boys and girls aged 6-16 from the local area. The family-friendly community event is being held at West Park, and kicked off with 85 teams taking part in the Girls tournament, which took place on Saturday 13th May. The Boys tournament will span over the following weekend of Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st May.
Uckfield Grasshoppers have been a central part of sporting and community life in Uckfield since 1981. Established initially with just two teams for boys in the under 10 and under 11 age groups, the club has flourished over the years and now provides football for both boys and girls from the age of 5 up to and including 18-year-olds. Last year, the Sussex Sixes brought together over 6,000 spectators, raising vital funds for grassroots football and promoting positive participation.
Nusrat Ghani said: “I was delighted to join Uckfield Grasshoppers at West Park and support the Girls tournament, bringing together football fans and players from across East Sussex and helping to raise funds for our superb clubs. Grassroots football is at the heart of Wealden sport, and it is fantastic to witness the next generation of Lionesses in the making and be part of their journey. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of Uckfield Grasshoppers, tournament organisers, football coaches, parents, and of course our excellent young players for a wonderful day of community spirit and footballing fun.”
