Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, visited Hailsham-based charity Bird Aid, to congratulate the team of volunteers on receiving nearly £20,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund.
Bird Aid runs a rescue and rehabilitation centre specialising in gulls, as well as a charity shop and community café in Hailsham. They encourage volunteers from all sections of the community, but especially young adults with a learning disability, to have opportunities to be involved in animal welfare and gain work experience in retail and hospitality.
The £19,968 grant from the National Lottery is part of the latest £44,288 support awarded overall to community projects in Wealden between November 2023 and February 2024, and will support Bird Aid in developing further local employment opportunities for adults with a learning disability.
Other previous successful recipients of this funding in Wealden include Groombridge Film Society, Natureways-Therapy, The Sandcastle Trust, Hailsham Music Theatre, the Mount Camphill Community in Wadhurst, MAYFACS, Lymley Wood Community Interest Company in Mayfield and Artytime in Crowborough.
Nusrat Ghani said: “We are incredibly lucky to have so many wonderful community projects, providing support to local residents. I was pleased to visit Bird Aid’s shop and community café in Hailsham to see the fantastic work they are doing to support adults with learning disabilities and congratulate the whole team on receiving this much-needed boost from National Lottery.”
