Yesterday evening, Nus Ghani was elected as one of five Conservative MPs onto the highly competitive eleven-member Foreign Affairs Select Committee, chaired by neighbouring Tonbridge and Malling MP Tom Tugendhat. Nus was one of a dozen MPs to put her name forward for the Committee.
The Committee is responsible for holding the Foreign Office and its ministers to account, examining the department’s expenditure, administration and policy. This remit also encompasses other bodies and organisations associated with the Foreign Office, such as the British Council, the United Nations and NATO.
In just the last week, the Foreign Office has covered the political situation in Venezuela, the humanitarian crisis in Burma and the developing tensions in North Korea. The issues the Foreign Affairs Committee will consider include many issues on which Nus has previously campaigned, including Daesh, UK-India relations and the refugee crisis.
Commenting on her election, Ms Ghani said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been elected to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee by my colleagues.
I am eagerly anticipating getting down to the important work of holding the Foreign Office to account and running inquiries into some of the most pressing issues currently facing the UK and the world.”
