Dear resident,
I hope that you had a wonderful summer and start to the autumn. It has been a busy time for me, catching up with residents of all corners of the constituency as part of my Summer Surgery Tour.
π Mobile surgeries took place in πWadhurst, Frant, Groombridge, Hartfield, Crowborough, Hailsham, Cowbeech, Bodle Street Green, Rushlake Green, Punnettβs Town, Broad Oak, Cross in Hand, Mayfield, Town Row, Five Ashes, Hadlow Down, Maynards Green, Heathfield and Horam.
β
We've covered issues including speeding; employment costs especially in the hospitality sector; issues around access to education and SEND provision; broadband provision; train connectivity and accessibility; access to healthcare and GPs; speeding, parking, road conditions and issues with Highways; support for local charities; farmersβ tax and rural crime; and concerns about the planning proposals put forward by the current Liberal Democrat and Green Coalition leadership at Wealden District Council.
I was overwhelmed by the positive reaction at every single stop and Iβm grateful to all residents who came by to say hello or to share their questions, concerns of personal difficulties that I might be able to help with.
September has brought some distressing news to mums-to-be in Crowborough and across the constituency. A decision has been made by the Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust to pause births at Crowborough Birthing Centre from now until May next year. Upon receiving this information, I immediately contacted the Trust to request an urgent meeting and I have also written to the Secretary of State for Health regarding the matter.
Over the last 10 years, I have fought alongside The Friends of Crowborough Hospital many times against the Centreβs closure and campaigned for its prompt reopening when poor, shortsighted decisions about the facility were made by the Trust, most notably during the Covid pandemic. It is regrettable that we are in this situation again.
It is completely unacceptable and I have set up a petition on my website that you can sign and join me in saving the Centre ππ½
Join my fight to save the Centre! This is a team effort. Nearly 3,000 submissions were made already, but we need more data to put pressure on the Trust and show how needed & valuable the Birthing Centre is. Mums deserve a choice! Sign my petition ππ½ HERE ππ½
This Thursday, I'll be joining the Friends of Crowborough Hospital and mums from across Sussex Weald at a rally in support of the Crowborough Birthing Centre reopening. Do come and join us if you can!
