Nus Ghani has congratulated human rights campaigner Nadia Murad for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of her work to end the use of sexual violence in war.
As a Member of the Home Affairs Committee and then the Foreign Affairs Committee, Nus repeatedly brought up the plight of the Yazidi women. Nus met with Nadia Murad in her campaign to recognise the atrocities committed by Daesh as genocidal, which allows further prosecutions to be brought against Daesh members. This campaign led to official recognition from the United Nations that Daesh were committing genocide.
As a young Yazidi woman, Nadia Murad was captured by Daesh as a sex slave. Her powerful story and courage has played a significant role in the fight against Daesh, including bringing light on the sheer scale of the atrocities they have committed.
Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, said: “I was delighted that Nadia won the Nobel Peace Prize, a full recognition of her bravery, dedication and perseverance to shed light on the horrors committed by Daesh.
"I am fortunate enough to have met with Nadia on various occasions, and her powerful testimony was instrumental in getting sexual violence recognised and in the collection evidence of Daesh’s atrocities to push for prosecution.
“Nadia is an inspiration to so many women around the world fighting against the use of sexual violence in war, and the Nobel Peace Prize is a well-deserved honour.”
