Nus Ghani, MP for Wealden, has been overseeing various debates in Westminster Hall, covering national issues such as rail infrastructure, rail investment and the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in reaching the net zero target.

Under Nus’ chairmanship, MPs discussed investment into rail infrastructure and improvements of social mobility and securing a carbon-neutral future of train transport. The Transport Minister offered assurances that the Government was regularly consulting local leaders and business groups to hear their priorities for major rail investments and ensure that Government investments help boost regional economies. Full details of the debate are available here.

The role of SMEs in eliminating emissions in Britain and the steps the Government can take to support SMEs throughout the transition to net zero were discussed in the subsequent session. The Business Minister closed the debate by affirming that SMEs have a key role in driving economic growth and that there is a net zero small business engagement strategy in place. More details are available here.

Later in the week, Nus chaired the first meeting of the Eleventh Delegation Committee and oversaw the passage of legislation through the committee stage. The committee is considering the supplementary protection certificates for some patented medicines and agrochemicals sold in the UK and the changes in regulations at the end of the transition period. The Bill will then move to the House of Commons Chamber for final approval.

Nus Ghani said: “It is a great honour to be appointed by the Speaker and to play a key part in legislating for our country. I was delighted to chair Westminster Hall debates, debating key policy issues that have great impacts on our life in Wealden. The position of Chair is a great privilege and comes with great responsibility of ensuring that legislation is accurately passed through the committee stage before it reaches final approval in the House of Commons.”
