Wealden District Council has secured a grant of £330,000 to support the re-opening of its four leisure centres in Crowborough, Uckfield, Hailsham and Heathfield, a financial boost welcomed by Wealden MP Nus Ghani.
The funding is from the National Leisure Recovery Fund, administered by Sport England, and it has been made available to local authorities in England through the Government’s £100 million fund to support local leisure facilities.
Nus has previously raised the impact of Covid-19 restrictions on gyms and outdoor sports with the Minister and brought the concerns of Wealden’s residents and businesses to his attention, advocating for the support and reopening of Wealden’s Covid-safe sport facilities in East Sussex.
Nus Ghani said: “The importance of physical activity for the nation’s physical and mental wellbeing is more important now than ever and leisure centres will play a crucial in rebuilding a more resilient Britain post-pandemic. Wealden leisure centres, gyms and outdoor sport venues have suffered great losses due to the lockdown restrictions.
"I am pleased that Wealden District Council was able to secure this much needed boost, which will help the sector recover and deliver sport and leisure services as soon as Government guidance allows.”
